Key takeaway
Accelink's third-quarter revenue growth lowered its expense ratio, prompting Citi to raise its earnings forecasts, but rising inventories and a relatively high valuation temper optimism.
How large was the third-quarter earnings beat?
Accelink's revenue in the third quarter of 2026 was 5.073 billion yuan, up 54% year on year and 10% and 26% above Citi's forecast and the Bloomberg consensus, respectively.
Net profit for the quarter was 702 million yuan, up 103% year on year. It was 5% above the 667 million yuan midpoint of the company's guidance, and exceeded Citi's forecast and the Bloomberg consensus by 36% and 68%, respectively. Profit grew much faster than revenue.
Why did profit grow faster?
Citi attributes the key to operating leverage: as revenue grew, operating expenses were below expectations, reducing expenses as a proportion of revenue. Third-quarter operating expenses were 503 million yuan, 19% and 4% below Citi's forecast and the Bloomberg consensus, respectively.
The expense ratio fell to 9.9% for the quarter, 3.5 and 3.0 percentage points below Citi's forecast and the Bloomberg consensus, respectively. The research and development expense ratio was 5.3%, down 1.6 percentage points year on year.
As earnings forecasts rise, what has changed in capital tied up?
Citi lowered its operating expense assumptions for 2026 through 2028 and raised its net profit forecasts by 10%, 8% and 7%, respectively. The bank expects expense ratios of 14.8%, 14.3% and 13.6% in those years, reflecting its assessment that the company's cost control is improving.
Stocking up pushed inventories higher: inventories rose to 12 billion yuan at the end of the third quarter of 2026, up 110.76% from the end of 2025. Citi attributed this to preparations of materials and reserves needed for higher fourth-quarter shipments.
Cash flow pressure is also reflected in Citi's model: the bank forecasts operating cash flow of negative 1.306 billion yuan in 2026, compared with an actual positive 1.628 billion yuan in 2025; the change in working capital in its model for the same period is negative 3.406 billion yuan.
Why did Citi upgrade only to Neutral?
Citi upgraded the stock from Sell to Neutral and raised its target price from 124 yuan to 134 yuan. The bank believes further downside is limited after the share price fell 28% since its August update.
The target price is based on 44.3 times forecast earnings per share for 2027, using the same valuation multiple as before; relative to the 128.63 yuan share price used in the report, the target implies upside of approximately 4.2%.
Citi also believes that, at approximately 42.5 times its estimated 2027 earnings, Accelink is valued relatively highly compared with optical communications peers listed in Hong Kong and mainland China; lower average selling prices and margins for domestic optical modules also make its profitability lower than that of global peers.
