Revenue beat expectations. Why was profit weaker?
- Sinbon’s revenue in the third quarter of 2026 was 9.7 billion New Taiwan dollars, up 8% quarter on quarter and 28% year on year, exceeding Citi and Bloomberg consensus estimates by 4% and 2%, respectively. Earnings per share were 3.79 New Taiwan dollars, up 24% year on year, broadly in line with Citi’s estimate but 4% below consensus.
- Gross margin fell 0.77 percentage points quarter on quarter to 23.8%, below Citi’s estimate of 24.6%. The main reason was an increased sales share of lower-margin semiconductor cabinet assembly; shipments of automotive and communications products also increased.
- Higher spending on product development, prototyping and freight kept operating expenses high. Although operating profit rose 50% year on year, it was still 4% and 7% below Citi and Bloomberg consensus estimates, respectively.
How will semiconductor business growth affect future profit?
- Citi expects demand from two major semiconductor customers to support a potential increase in cabinet assembly sales from 3 billion to 3.5 billion New Taiwan dollars in 2026 to 5 billion to 5.5 billion New Taiwan dollars in 2027, making the business a continuing major growth driver.
- A higher share of this business may continue to dilute the group’s gross margin, but expanding sales could also increase revenue and gross profit. Citi believes the market already understands the effect of this product mix shift on margins and that it does not change its investment view.
- Citi expects semiconductor and industrial automation demand to support revenue growth through 2027; humanoid robots and drones could make additional contributions as shipments expand, while low-Earth-orbit satellites are also a medium- to long-term opportunity.
Why does Citi maintain its Buy rating?
- Citi believes steady growth in existing businesses, together with medium- to long-term opportunities in new applications, supports its positive view. The company has limited direct AI exposure and a relatively diversified business, making it relatively defensive amid volatility in AI-related markets.
- Citi assigns a Buy rating and a target price of 370 New Taiwan dollars, applying a target price-to-earnings multiple of 23 times to forecast earnings per share for the second half of 2026 through the first half of 2027. The bank says this multiple represents a 20% premium to the historical average of 19 times since 2018.
- Downside risks listed by Citi include weaker-than-expected growth in non-IT and non-consumer applications, intensifying competition, rising raw material and labor costs, and exchange-rate fluctuations.
