Key takeaway
NXP’s orders, pricing and new businesses support growth, but new-product expenses and the extent of the automotive market recovery constrain Citi’s expectations for earnings improvement.
How did third-quarter results and fourth-quarter guidance change?
Revenue in the third quarter of 2026 was 3.79 billion dollars, up 8% sequentially and slightly above the market consensus of 3.75 billion dollars; the automotive and communications businesses were the main drivers. Earnings per share, including stock-based compensation expenses, were 3.75 dollars, also above the consensus of 3.66 dollars.
The company’s fourth-quarter revenue guidance is 3.85 billion dollars, up 2% sequentially, slightly below the market consensus of 3.87 billion dollars but better than seasonal trends. Gross margin guidance, including stock-based compensation expenses, is 58.6%, above the consensus of 58.4%; the company attributed this to improvements in revenue, product mix and capacity utilization.
Orders are strengthening. Why does the automotive recovery remain constrained?
The book-to-bill ratio is above 1 across all end markets and regions, and the order backlog continues to grow and extend into 2027. About 80% of lead times exceed 16 weeks, compared with 25% a year ago.
However, management said that despite low automotive inventories and improving demand, it has yet to see broad-based automotive inventory restocking. Citi noted that automotive accounts for about 56% of company revenue and that demand remains weak.
Pricing is another area of improvement: the company expects prices to be flat in 2026, compared with an earlier forecast of a low-single-digit percentage decline. Pricing contributed about 1 percentage point to revenue growth in the third quarter, and a similar contribution is expected in the fourth quarter to offset rising input costs.
What will drive growth and gross margin improvement in 2027?
The company expects double-digit revenue growth in 2027, driven by adoption of software-defined vehicles and continued strength in its industrial business. Citi’s model forecasts 2027 revenue of 16 billion dollars, up 11.8% year over year.
Management hopes to raise gross margin, excluding stock-based compensation expenses, to 60% through a more favorable product mix. Factory utilization is expected to rise from around 85% in the third and fourth quarters of 2026 to nearly 90% in 2027.
Data centers are another source of incremental growth: the company expects related revenue in 2026 to exceed its original target of 500 million dollars and reach about 1 billion dollars in 2028, driven by new-product ramp-ups, design wins and expanded customer partnerships. Citi also noted that the business currently accounts for only 3%–4% of revenue.
VSMC is expected to begin production for NXP in the first half of 2027 and contribute substantial output in 2028. Management expects the project to deliver a structural gross margin improvement of about 2 percentage points once fully ramped in 2028.
Why did Citi cut its earnings forecasts and maintain a neutral rating?
Higher operating expenses from new-product launches, together with lower gross margin forecasts, led Citi to cut its earnings-per-share forecasts for 2026 through 2028 by 2%, 4% and 4%, respectively; its 2027 forecast fell from 16.30 dollars to 15.63 dollars.
The company expects operating expenses excluding stock-based compensation expenses to be about 23% of revenue in the first half of 2027, falling below 23% in the second half. In other words, growth initiatives contribute revenue while upfront expenses also affect profit.
Citi believes that, heading into 2027, NXP’s earnings forecast revisions will be weaker than those of its peers, and its data-center business accounts for a limited share of revenue. The bank maintained its neutral rating and cut its price target from 260 dollars to 250 dollars, using a price-to-earnings multiple of 14.
